Both men and women who attend a Childbirth preparation class reported higher satisfaction of the birth experience. ** Paternal perspectives of the childbirth experience.Maternal Child Nursing Journal, Jul-Sep,1993**
The women attendees reported less pain and difficulty and had lower incidents of forceps or vacuum assisted delivery and c-section. In addition, they were less likely to request pain relief and were more likely to initiate and be successful at breastfeeding. ** Journal of Psychosomatic Research, May,1992 **
Perhaps the most interesting finding is that class goers were more likely to have professional labor support(doulas) and seek the help of a lactation consultant.
With the average prenatal visit clocking in at 6 minutes(time actually spent with the OB) **Birthing our future,1999**{ Certified Nurse Midwives averaged 23.7 minutes}**Journal of Nurse-Midwifery
May-June 1981** and a sky rocketing c-section rate ;more and more expectant families are turning to childbirth educators and doulas.
In a two part series we will explore the questions expectant families need to ask of prospective childbirth educators and doulas as well as themselves for a safer and more satisfying birth experience.

Infant Massage has its roots in many ancient cultures. It has recently been rediscovered and adapted to the western world. Infant Massage promotes many benefits, such as:
improved sleep for both baby and parents
relief of constipation, gas and colic
increased relaxation
promotion of bonding
furthermore, one half hour of massage can alleviate the negative effects of 8 hours of separation from your baby.
The key elements of massage that are responsible for the numerous benefits are:
eye-to-eye contact
skin-to-skin contact,
soothing sounds,and facial expressions,
reassuring olfactory stimulus
Participants in this class will learn to create a special time that fosters mutual love, compassion, and respect. By massaging their own babies as the instructor demonstrates techniques on a lifelike doll. This helps to ensure that parents will become comfortable with the massage techniques, bond with their baby and be able to address any specific questions about the skills learned. Subsequent classes provide opportunity to share their experiences and challenges and acquire advanced skills from the instructor. Each class in the series will focus on a specific area of the body, culminating with the skill and knowledge to massage the entire body as well as focus on specific areas to alleviate acute issues( colic, teething, crying, fatigue etc).

Hypnosis is a powerful tool in helping to minimize pain and fear which has been shown to shorten the length of labor and decrease the likelihood of interventions. Participants in this class will learn about nutrition, exercise, and birth planning while birth partners will learn how to lend support with hypnosis. This series is designed to teach participants how to incorporate Hypnobabies into their subconscious to eliminate pain associated with childbirth. At the end of this class, you will undergo a birth rehearsal that will build confidence by showing you how to implement Hypnobabies skills into your birthing time.
